INFORMATION

The Signal and Image Processing Laboratory (BUSIM) is one of the most productive and newly emerging research facilities in Bogaziçi University. This laboratory purports to be a regional center of excellence in the theory and the applications of image processing, speech processing, video coding, computer vision applications, communications and other signal processing applications.

The research horizon is developing as a result of contacts with international research community, as well as funded research projects. BUSIM has started with a significant research and equipment grant from National Research Council (TÜBITAK), as well as Bogaziçi University funds. These funds were instrumental in setting the laboratory infrastructure a nd equipment purchases.

Samples of current and prospective research interests and projects under the umbrella of BUSIM are as follows: model-based image and video coding; wavelet design and wavelet-based image compression; object modeling using implicit polynomials; 2-D lattice filter design; computer vision applications such as quality control in textile industry, PCB board inspection, document analysis and recognition; sound quality analysis in industrial app liances; face processing' human face and expression recognition.

The computing infrastructure consists of a number of personal computers (4 PCs with 800Mhz & 512 Mb ram, 1PC with 700Mhz & 256 Mb ram, 1 PC with 400 Mhz & 128 Mb ram, 4 SUN ULTRA5 workstations, 1 Slicon Graphics Indigo2 workstation), camera, frame grabber and image sequencer. Lab students have also access to the computing facilities in the Biomedical Institute, Computer Engineering Department as well as INTERNET access.
